14 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL The Flames led by as many as 25 points as it went on to claim an upset victory over #7 Northern Kentucky, 72-60, in the Horizon League Tournament at Joe Louis Arena. It was UIC's first conference tournament win since 2014. The Flames set an all-time team record for a tournament game by shooting 54.2% as four players scored in double figures, led by 16 from Brittany Byrd, who also notched a team-high five steals. BENDER BREAKS SCHOOL RECORDS Terri Bender became UIC's all-time assist leader, finishing her stellar career with 504 assists, as she climbed to second on the school's all-time steals list with 269. During her senior campaign, she joined the 1,000-point club as the 21st member with a total of 1,107. Bender is one of just four Flames in history to record 1,000 points, 400 assists, 400 rebounds, and 250 steals, joining the likes of Penny Armstrong (1991-95), Joanne McCarthy (1992-97) and Chrissy Dizon (2002-06). Brittany Byrd, growing into her own as a sophomore, was the Flames' leading scorer and rebounder. She averaged 12.9 points and 6.0 rebounds, after logging just 4.1 and 1.3 as a freshman. She achieved double-doubles in consecutive games against Cleveland State and Milwaukee. Byrd set career highs in points (20, Feb. 25) and rebounds (11, Jan. 14), and had multiple games with five steals. The Flames hosted their annual Hoop Pink game on Feb. 16. They wore special pink uniforms for breast cancer awareness, and honored several breast cancer survivors at halftime. In a thrilling finish to the game, Terri Bender made two free throws with three seconds to go, giving the Flames a 63-62 win over Detroit Mercy.
