11 HORIZON LEAGUE CHAMPIONS Entering the Horizon League Tournament with the No. 2 seed, the Flames dramatically captured a 2-1 overtime victory in the semifinals against Milwaukee before moving on to defeat Wright State, 1-0, for the championship. The trophy was the fourth for the program, the first since 2007 and the first under the direction of head coach Sean Phillips. Oscar Rivero, the winning goal scorer, was deemed Tournament MVP as he placed on the All-Tournament Team with Andrew Putna, Max Todd and Oscar Gonzalez. UIC used a trio of 7-0 shutouts to wrap up the regular season and secure an 8-1 conference record, allowing the Flames to finish at the top of the Horizon League for the 18th time in the program history and cut a share of the regular season title. It was the first time since 2013 that UIC came in first, while its eight wins were the most since 2012. Due to the tiebreaker, the Flames earned the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament, but were taken out by Wright State. After securing the right to host the Horizon League Championship on the final day of the regular season, UIC defended its turf at Granderson Stadium by going unbeaten in three games and winning the title for the fifth time overall and first since 2008. The Flames shut out Oakland, 8-0, to begin play then took down Wright State twice, 4-1 and 4-2. David Cronin was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Reid Birlingmair, Cody Bohanek, Jake Dahlberg and Mickey McDonald. The Flames were awarded the title of Horizon League Tournament champions for the ninth time in program history as they defeated Youngstown State in the title game at Flames Field. All it took was three wins for UIC to take the trophy for the first time since 2011 and it did just that with an opening win over Wright State, 2-0, and then two victories over the Penguins, 6-3 and 6-3. Tiana Mack- Miller was named Tournament MVP as Elaine Heflin, Lexi Watts and Kayla Wedl placed on the All-Tournament Team.
