t a recent faculty meeting, Vesna Jevtovic-Todorovic presented the 2012 Douglas Eastwood Award to NATHAN
POIRO, a fourth year medical student. Poiro will enter the An- esthesiology Residency Program at Temple University in 2013. The Eastwood Award is presented annually to a graduating
medical student who has worked closely with the Department of Anesthesiology. It is given in memory of Douglas East- wood, the first chair of the department. Dr. Eastwood served as chair from 1955 to 1971. While a medical student at the University of Virginia, Dr.
Poiro headed the Anesthesia Interest Group and served as Virginia's student delegate to the ASA 2011 annual meeting in Chicago. He worked in the Slobodan M. Todorovic labora- tory on T-type calcium channels. He leaves medical school having published a peer reviewed article and an abstract with Robert H. Thiele and Edward C. Nemergut: • Thiele RH. UVA Department of Surgery in 2012-2013 and move to Philadelphia to enter the Temple University Residency in Anesthesiology in July 2013. Although he is open to all areas of anesthesiology, his "heart" is in cardiac anesthesia at the moment.

Travel expenses, especially those for hotel accommodations, mount up quickly and add to our students' post- graduation debt loads.
