BADGERING... HANNAH BERNER »» WOMEN'S TENNIS Brooklyn, N.Y., native Hannah Berner is the lone senior on the women's tennis team this season. A year ago, Berner recorded 11 wins at the No. 1 doubles spot and finished the season on a three-match win streak in singles. What is it like to be the team's only senior? "I am in a unique situation being the lone senior with six freshmen, but I love working with a young and inspiring team. I have also been forced to mature in order to help lead the team to success." How do you show leadership? "Fortunately, I am a Leo and have been bossing people around since I was little. [Laughs] However, leading a Division I team involves gaining a lot of trust and respect from your teammates. I have learned how to do this from previous captains and coaches that I have had over the years. I have learned that leading by example and practicing what you preach is the most powerful way to get the team on board." What do you enjoy about playing in the fall? "The fall is exciting because you get to practice and improve your game a lot, while getting some great competition under your belt." What is your favorite, singles or doubles? Why? "I grew up watching my father and his friends play a friendly game of doubles every summer and once I got good enough, I was able to play with them. They taught me all about the game of doubles and I still use their strategies to this day." What is the biggest difference between Madison and Brooklyn? "People in Madison pronounce their vowels a lot harder than in Brooklyn. However, both places have a ton of pride in their sports. Go Nets!" What are you goals for your senior year? "My goal for my senior year is to really lay everything on the line and finish college tennis with a bang! I would like to win All-Big Ten." What do you want to do after college? "I change my mind every day when I wake up in the morning, but I first might travel around Europe to play some professional tennis tournaments and then my current dream is to become a television host... wish me luck!" 22 » VARSITY SEPTEMBER 20, 2012
