But after a diagnosis of malignant melanoma with a high risk of metastasis, Kron found the tables turned. He called on Craig Slingluff, MD '84, of UVA's Beirne B. Carter Immunology Center, and joined a clinical trial testing a therapeutic vaccine for melanoma. It's one of the exciting ways the Center is shedding light on the role the immune system plays in causing and curing disease. By Linda J. Kobert 16 PROBING THE HEART OF MEDICINE Developed by a group of students from the Schools of Medicine and Nursing at the University of Virginia, the HeArt of Medicine is an innovative program that provides opportunities for students to collaborate as they also develop an understanding for the complex and sensitive issue of end-of-life care.
