TURNING T CELLS
Toward the Fight Against Cancer
Irving Kron, MD, Res '82, is usually on the
working side of the operating table. But
after a diagnosis of malignant melanoma
with a high risk of metastasis, Kron found
the tables turned. He called on Craig
Slingluff, MD '84, of UVA's Beirne B.
Carter Immunology Center, and joined a
clinical trial testing a therapeutic vaccine
for melanoma. It's one of the exciting ways
the Center is shedding light on the role
the immune system plays in causing and
curing disease.

PROBING THE HEART OF
MEDICINE
Developed by a group of students from
the Schools of Medicine and Nursing
at the University of Virginia, the HeArt
of Medicine is an innovative program
that provides opportunities for students
to collaborate as they also develop an
understanding for the complex and
sensitive issue of end-of-life care. Led
by student leaders with oversight from
faculty advisors, the HeArt of Medicine is
growing roots in the School of Medicine
curriculum.
