111 I t was a record-breaking championship season in February for the University of Iowa swimming and diving program. e Hawkeyes broke eight school records at the 2017 Big Ten Championships. Senior Emma Sougstad was in the middle of four school records in West Lafayette, Indiana, from Feb. 15-18.e Forest City, Iowa, native was a member of the record-setting 200-medley relay along with junior Meghan Lavelle, junior Mekenna Scheitlin, and freshman Hannah Burvill that swam a time of 1:38.99. e same quartet broke the 400-medley relay record, touching in 3:36.71; the 400-freestyle relay of senior Serena Wanasek, Sougstad, freshman Allyssa Fluit, and Burvill posted a time of 3:18.83 for another top time in Iowa's record books. Individually, Sougstad took down her own record in the 200-breaststroke, touching in 2:10.62. Sougstad is the school-record holder in nine events — five individual and four relays. Sougstad tallied seven top-nine finishes during championship week at the Boilermaker Aquatics Center. She was fourth in the 100 breast and 200 IM, seventh in the 200 breast, was part of the 200 and 400-medley relays, and ninth in the 200 and 400-freestyle relays. e Hawkeye men set three individual and one relay school records from Feb. 22-25 in Columbus, Ohio. Sophomore Jack Smith broke two, sprinting to the program's top time in the 100 free, while also being a member of the 800-freestyle relay. Smith posted a time of 43.15 seconds in the 100 free to break Paul Gordon's previous record. Smith joined junior omas Rathbun, senior Kyle Gannon, and freshman Joe Myhre to swim a 6:24.93 to down the 800-freestyle record. e Hawkeyes also received record performances from junior Jerzy Twarowski in the 100 fly (46.43), while sophomore Kenneth Mende tied Grant Betulius' top time in the 200 back, touching in 1:42.19. Iowa tallied eight top-10 finishes during the championships at Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. e 200-freestyle relay posted the top showing of the week, placing fih with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:18.13.
