The spring semester is well underway and our students, faculty and staff are busy doing the daily work of education. The late John Wooden, known as the "Wizard of Westwood" for his successes as UCLA's basketball coach, said "It's the little details that are vital. It's the little things that make big things happen." That is so true at Colorado Mesa and I think it is something you will see evidenced in the cover story, "See How We've Grown," in this issue of The Maverick. It is the daily work and attention to detail by all of the people at CMU that result in the big changes at CMU. Part of that story is about the economic impact CMU has on western Colorado. That is important and quantifiable. Not so easily quantified is the inestimable impact that our students make. It is challenging to quantify the value of a well- educated citizenry who are prepared to meet the workforce needs of our country and participate civically in a democratic society. Not surprisingly, CMU is once again preparing for the likelihood of flat, if not decreasing, state funding. That means we look for ways to cut expenses as far from the classroom as possible and may have to consider a modest increase in tuition. It also means that we will continue to count on support from our alumni, supporters and partners. I bring that up to draw your attention to a couple of stories you will find in the following pages. One is about recently retired biology Professor Bruce Bauerle and his generous donation to CMU. Another is a short entry about our newly launched crowdfunding platform, MavFunder. I encourage you to take a look at both. I hope you enjoy this issue of The Maverick and, as always, want you to know that I am interested in what you think.
