The Bears also had a sub-.500 record. Both were unexpected. • Despite the results, the Golden Bears showed their promise, picking up wins against top-10 opponents and advancing to the semifinal of the Pac-12 Tournament. Looking to build on that, Cal welcomes back four of its starters from last year, including USBWA National Freshman of the Year Kristine Anigwe. • As a freshman, Anigwe took on a lot of responsibility, putting up big numbers and nearly averaging a double- double. She was the second-highest scoring freshman in the country and second in the Pac-12 among all scorers. She was also top six in rebounding in the Conference. She looks to play a similar role in 2016-17. • Anigwe will have plenty of support with four starters returning, including junior Courtney Range. Range was a big presence in the post, averaging 13.4 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game. • Sophomore Mikayla Cowling gives the Bears another big presence inside. She, along with Range and sopho- more guard Asha Thomas were the only three players to play in every game, as well as start every game. • The Bears had plenty of talent last year, but depth was an issue, at times playing with as few as seven play- ers. But Gottlieb addressed that issue, adding three freshman this season, two of which were ranked among the top 80 recruits in the country, including Mi'Cole Cayton and Jaelyn Brown. • Though the Golden Bears have just two seniors on the team, the squad brings plenty of experience with its returnees having gained plenty of playing experience over the last two years.
