I only • 1989 NCAA II National Champion, 2001 NCAA National Semifinals HEAD COACH DAVID RUBIO • Begins his 25th season at Arizona where he has led the Wildcats to 12 20-win seasons and 17 NCAA Tournament appearances. • Honored as Coach of the Year by ASICS/Volleyball Magazine during the 2001 campaign, guiding Arizona to its first-ever national semifinal appearance. • Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 2000, leading UA to its first Conference title. • Guided Arizona from a winless league record in 1991 to the NCAA West Regionals in 1993. That same year was named American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) West Region Coach of the Year. TEAM OUTLOOK Entering his 25th season at the helm, head coach David Rubio welcomes back five starters from last year's team that went to its third-straight NCAA Tournament and sixth in the last seven years. In addition to the majority of the starting lineup back, UA has five seniors on the squad, including honorable mention AVCA All-American and All-Pac-12 honoree Penina Snuka. The Wildcats also look to be bolstered by its 10th-ranked recruiting class in 2016. STRENGTHS » The Wildcats have a balanced squad in terms of experience. Five seniors return for 2016, with five returning starters. Balancing that experience is a seven-player recruiting class that was ranked 10th in the country by PrepVolleyball.com. » A seasoned setter, senior Penina Snuka (pictured) is back to direct the offense in 2016. She was second in the Pac-12 in assists per game (10.88), en route to earning honorable mention AVCA All-America recognition. » Fellow senior Kalei Mau had a breakout season in 2015, more than doubling her match appearances while ranking 23rd in the nation and third in the Conference in kills per set. » Arizona brings back its top libero in senior Laura Larson, who will anchor a defensive squad that has led the league in digs per set the last three seasons. CONCERNS » The Wildcats seem to have all the pieces in place to improve upon a seventh-place league finish last year. How Arizona manages the expectations in 2016 will be the bigger test for this experienced and talented squad. » While Rubio has an experienced core to depend on this season, integrating a talented freshman class will still be im- portant to the success of the team. How quickly the newcomers are able to contribute with consistency could be the factor for Arizona to jump back into the top half of the standings. » Arizona starts the season with a tough road tournament where it faces two top-10 teams to open the campaign, including defending NCAA Champion Wisconsin. UA's young talent will be tested right out of the gate and how they perform in those big matches could (or could not) set the tone for the season for that class depending on the outcome of the matches. 2016 ARIZONA ROSTER
