KNOCKING DOWN BARRIERS: Reggie Torian won the NCAA title in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing in a school-record time of 13.39. His finish put the Badgers in fourth place in the team standings, tying the highest NCAA finish ever for a UW men's team.

ROWING TO VICTORY: The men's rowing team capped an unbeaten season with its first varsity eight national title since 1990, while the women's lightweights captured their fourth varsity eight title in five years on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.

CHANGING OF THE GUARDS: Interim head coach Ed Nuttycombe, an assistant since 1980, was officially named head men's track and field coach. He succeeded the late Dan McClimon, who was killed in a plane crash.
Ron Dayne was named the 1999-2000 Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year by the Big Ten Conference, becoming the first UW male student-athlete to earn the conference award. In his final season as a Badger, Dayne won the Heisman Trophy, was named MVP of the Rose Bowl and set an NCAA career record with 6,397 rushing yards.
