May 2016 Commencement at Colorado Mesa University was outstanding. I hope you had the opportunity to attend. The words from our commencement speaker Jennifer DeCasper were inspiring. DeCasper, a CMU alumna who serves as chief of staff to U.S. Sen. Tim Scott from South Carolina, spoke of how one can use what others perceive of as failure as a building block to success. What a great role model for the 1,222 students who graduated on May 14. Our thanks go to Jennifer for traveling all the way out to share her thoughts and experiences with our graduates. Benjamin Franklin wrote, "Without growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement and success have no meaning." Those words ring true for our students and, equally so, for our institution. We continue to grow and progress as the university continues to mature. Even as we prepare for the future, we adhere to our core values — student-focused, small classes, outstanding faculty committed to teaching, rigorous academic programs and yet financially accessible. Progress on the new Health Sciences building continues and much of it will be completed for the fall semester. Our health sciences students and faculty are anxious to get settled into the new facility. That's just one of many things happening at CMU as stories in this issue of The Maverick will attest. We hope you enjoy learning more about our growing engineering program that began with a mutually beneficial partnership with the University of Colorado – Boulder. The addition of civil engineering expands that collaboration. With that program addition will also come a new facility. We will soon begin construction on a new building that will house both mechanical and civil engineering as well as the John McConnell Math & Science Center. Please enjoy this issue of The Maverick and don't hesitate to stop by my office and say hello any time you are on campus. Go Mavs!
