113 T here are goals laid out each year for the University of Iowa swimming and diving program. In 2015-16, the Hawkeyes made good on some of those expectations. Both the men's and women's teams were represent- ed (and scored team points) at the 2016 NCAA Championships. e Hawkeye women finished 38th nationally with nine team points; the men were 40th with six points. "We got Director's Cup points, and our ultimate goal is to have individual scorers at the NCAA Championships," said UI head coach Marc Long. "at was outstanding, and we came back with two All-Americans, individually. "at part is good, but we wanted to score more points. We had more qualifiers in the relays, but that didn't happen. We'll work on that for next year." Senior Roman Trussov capped off his Iowa career with two honorable mention All-America honors in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke. e Ka- zakhstan native finished 13th in the 200 breast in 1:55.24 and 15th in the 100 breast in 53.17 sec- onds. He became the first Hawkeye since 2013 to earn multiple All-America honors in the same season. e men's team has had at least one All-American in four of the last five seasons. On the women's side, junior Emma Sougstad garnered honorable mention All-America honors in the 100-breaststroke. She won the "B" final in a school-record time of 59.00 seconds to finish ninth overall. She was also an NCAA qualifier in the 200 IM and 200 breast. It was the second consecutive year the Hawkeye women had an All-American. Becky Stoughton was an honorable mention All-American in the 500 and 1,650 freestyle in 2015. Despite losing a combined 19 seniors, Long is ex- cited about the prospects for the program moving forward. "We lose Roman and Addison Boschult, which are big losses, but we return a young team," said Long. "It's encouraging for the men and women to have a good nucleus back. "Emma is going to be as hungry as ever aer get- ting ninth at the NCAAs. We have a good group of recruits coming in as well, so we're excited about our future." Iowa will return NCAA qualifiers Jerzy Twarowski, Jack Smith, and Kenneth Mende on the men's side and Sougstad and divers Calli Head and Lydia Lehnert on the women's side. e men's team signed eight student-athletes for 2016-17, while the women's program will welcome seven new- comers.
