In the only four Summer Olympic Games that included softball, the Pac-12 produced 65 Olympians. With such an extensive championship resume, it only seems fitting that Olympic team rosters would feature heavy representation by Pac-12 athletes. The United States started its historic Olympic run in the 1996 Games in Atlanta, going 8-1 and capturing its first gold medal. The Americans would again go on to win gold in 2000. Com- peting in Athens in 2004, the U.S. Olympic Team asserted its dominance, going a perfect 9-0 at the Games, recording a string of eight consecutive shutouts. Led by Arizona head coach Mike Candrea, the 2004 Olympic Team outscored its opponents 51-1 in the nine games. The team broke 11 world records and was affectionately deemed the "Real Dream Team" by Sports Illustrated. In 2008, the last year of softball as an Olympic sport, the United States took silver in a bittersweet finale in Beijing. Pac-12 softball players like Lisa Fernandez (UCLA), Jennie Finch (Arizona) and Jessica Mendoza (Stanford) became household names and international stars as the U.S. National Team set a precedent of success unmatched by other programs.
