The "Conference of Champions" has enjoyed unparalleled success in the NCAA Tournament and the Women's College World Series. Though the Pac-12 did not begin sponsoring softball until 1987, Conference teams have competed in the prestigious event since the NCAA started recognizing it as a sport in 1982. All nine Pac-12 teams have made appearances in the WCWS. In the NCAA's 31-year championship history, Pac-12 schools have won the title an astounding 23 times, more than any other conference in the na- tion. Additionally, there have been 12 occasions when the NCAA Champion- ship series featured two Conference schools. Most recently, the 2010 cham- pionship game pitted the sport's two most storied programs – Arizona and UCLA -- against each other. Overall, only 12 different teams have claimed the crown: UCLA (11), Arizona (8), Arizona State (2), Florida (2), Texas A&M (2), Oklahoma (2), California (1), Washington (1), Alabama (1), Cal State Fullerton (1), Fresno State (1) and Michigan (1). UCLA and Arizona have practically made the Women's College World Series a yearly stop with a combined 49 appearances. The Bruins took home six titles from 1982-90 while Arizona dominated the 1990s with five champi- onships of its own. Last season continued the standard of strong Pac-12 presence in the NCAA Tournament, with seven Conference teams advancing to Region- als. Three teams advanced to the Super Regionals, and Oregon and UCLA punched their tickets to Oklahoma City. Throughout NCAA softball history, players like Lisa Fernandez, Nancy Evans, Yvonne Gutierrez and Jenny Dalton have re-written the WCWS record books and many team records have been established in the process. The Pac-12 has continued its successful postseason run, accounting for 10 titles since 2000. The Conference has sent a team to the final series a remarkable 28 of 33 years. As a result of this unprecedented success, the Pac-12 Conference has established itself as the premier softball conference in the nation and truly the "Conference of Champions."
