ALEXIS NELSON »» WOMEN'S GOLF Badgering... Mason, Ohio, native Alexis Nelson was expected to contribute as a sophomore, but a bike/car accident left her on crutches in the fall. When she had the chance to join the team in the spring, she led UW and finished sixth in her opening tournament at the Westbrook Invitational with a 68-72-73—213, tying the 54-hole school record. She continued her stellar play with a stroke average of 77.50 through UW's final four tournaments. What has it been like to come back from injury and tie a school record? "It felt really great and was a confidence boost for sure. I feel like I have been inconsistent coming off of the injury, but tying the school record made me feel like I deserved to be back in the lineup again. Coming into the fall I was hitting the ball and playing better than ever, so the Westbrook low rounds made me feel better after how frustrated I felt." Are the Badgers on the verge of a breakthrough nationally in the rankings? "Most definitely. I thought this year was going to be that breakthrough, but we have had some very odd injuries that have set us back. We are only losing one starter and getting back a medical redshirt, so I feel very strongly that this team has a promising future." What is it like to travel to warm destinations during the spring season? "Traveling can make school more stressful, but these Madison winters and cold springs are (difficult for golfers). It's nice to get out in the sunshine and play in some warm conditions. I think the warmer the weather we can find makes for better moods and better practice and playing conditions." Did you play any other sports growing up? "I was obsessed with basketball. I played AAU basketball for several years, and I also played softball up until high school." What is your favorite place in the world and why? "I'm not sure. I think I haven't been there yet to be honest. I want to go to three places very badly though: New Zealand, Hawaii, and San Diego." 22 » VARSITY MAY 3, 2012
