Sports Illustrated's Paul Zimmerman was the analyst. Chris Berman was the lone reporter. There were no studio hosts or studio analysts. Mel Kiper had a full head of hair and was beginning his second year as the network's draft guru (Todd McShay was 8). That was the ESPN broadcast team for the telecast of the 1985 Na- tional Football League draft. Wisconsin senior wide receiver Al Toon watched the proceedings on television with his girlfriend, Jane — who would later become his wife — and Badgers assistant coach Fred Jackson and his wife, Theresa. (Since 1992, Jackson has been coaching at the University of Michigan.) The 12-round draft got under way on April 30, 1985; Toon's 22nd birthday. 37
