student perspective MedConnect Event NOVEMBER 11, 2011 The Medical Alumni Association and Medical School Foundation's mentoring and networking service, MedConnect, continues to succeed in linking students with alumni and Charlottesville-area physicians. With two events each year and an ongoing matching service, the program offers something for everyone. This particular MedConnect event drew over 50 students and 10 alumni. Alumni panelists spoke on varying topics including: Ways to balance work and social life, how they arrived at their particular specialties, and the composition of a typical workday. Two half-hour roundtable discussions offered a more casual atmosphere for students to delve into the specifics of the specialties represented by the panelists and physician attendees. Following the discussions, all attendees enjoyed a reception and casual conversation. Please contact Heather McCoy (heathermccoy@virginia.edu) if you are interested in becoming a MedConnect volunteer or a student participant. The list of alumni volunteers continues to grow each year, bringing the current tally to nearly 200. These gracious alumni open their homes to 4th year medical students who are traveling to their areas for residency interviews. They offer anything from lodging, meals, transportation to mentor- ship, insight into residency programs and suggestions on where to live. This season, 44 students matched for 87 of their interviews in 20 different states across the country. Thank you to everyone who partici- pated this season and helped to make this program a continued success! If you are looking for a unique way to give back and would like to host a UVA medical student next interview season (Oct 2012-Feb 2013) please visit UVAMedAlum.org/alumni/host-program for program information and the online alumni volunteer form.
