A type of particle accelerator, the cyclotron bombards a target atom with high energy protons to produce short-lived radioisotopes. UVA'
cyclotron—the only one in central Virginia—came on line in August 2011, supplying medically relevant radioisotopes commercially as well as for research purposes at the University.
