The squad extended No. 9 Denver Badgers' season ends "W ith the way our kids were playing, we ran out of games this year," UW head coach Mike Eaves said. "We really came into our own in the second half and saw growth. It's tough ... There's tears. There's disap- pointment." That postgame quote fol- lowing UW's 3-2 overtime 52 » VARSITY MARCH 15, 2012 with OT playoff loss Improving Badgers simply ran out of games loss in the third and deciding first-round WCHA playoff game at No. 9 Denver sum- marizes the feeling in the Badgers' locker room as the season comes to a close. It also gives great hope. There's no question in their minds that, as the season wound down, the Badgers were turning into one of the to three games on its home ice, be- fore the Pioneers shattered hopes of a run to the NCAA tournament with an overtime victory in Game 3. The Badgers contiued their solid play in Denver, helped in large part by the emergence of freshman goal- tender Joel Rumpel. He set a Bad- gers freshman record with his third shutout and turned aside 97 of the 102 shots he faced in the series. Other notable achievements of the weekend included Mark Zengerle's 50th point of the season, freshman Jake McCabe's highlight-reel rush on UW's only goal Friday (capping an All-America-type performance from the rookie), as well as junior Justin Schultz notching his 16th goal to climb within two of UW's all-time goal-scoring mark for defenders. Saying goodbye » The 26-member team will whittle down to at least 24, as senior de- fenseman Eric Springer graduates and freshman defenseman Patrick Daly departs. Daly informed the team Tuesday he will finish out the semester and transfer closer to his Victoria, Minn., home. Daly says he has no plans to play hockey.
