ARIZONA SOFTBALL – EIGHT-TIME NATIONAL CHAMPION The Years: 1991, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2006, 2007 The Numbers: Arizona has been to 22 of the 24 Women's College World Series since 1987. The Wildcats have won the NCAA Championship at eight of them, finished runner up in five of them and tied for third in three more, meaning Arizona has finished within a round of the NCAA title game in an amazing 16 of the last 24 years. An even 100 players have received at least two years of Mike Candrea's tutelage at Arizona; every one of them experienced a WCWS in their time, and 62 of them have celebrated a National Championship. It doesn't take a mathematician to see that if you spend two years with Candrea at Arizona, you will compete in Oklahoma City in June with a 62% chance of winning a national title. Candrea has changed the sport in the last quarter-century, with eight trophies to show for it. The Memories: "Winning a national championship has always been the culmination of a special group of players that have the skill set, mindset and competitive drive that allows them to perform the game at the highest level each and every day of the season. Championships are a highlight in anyone's career that will leave special memories for a life time about their teammates and the school they represent." - Eight-time national champion Mike Candrea. "Winning a national championship was the ultimate culmination of four years of hard work. It was something I had strived for from the minute I stepped foot on The University of Arizona campus. To be able to celebrate on the field with my teammates after winning the last game of the year is something I will never forget." - 2006 National Champion Alicia Hollowell. "It's the absolute greatest feeling in the world to be the last team celebrating and to be the team that finishes its season with a victory. Standing there with your teammates is what it's all about, carrying on the Wildcat Softball tradition, accomplishing something so much bigger than yourself, believing in one another, knowing you have given everything to WIN it all and We Did It! Amazing!" 2001 National Champion Jennie Finch. PREVIOUS NEXT BACK TO INDEX 4
