Letterwinners Returning/Lost/Newcomers: 7/6/8. Returning starters in bold. TEAM OUTLOOK Washington State will look to get off to another strong start in 2015 with junior Kyra Holt and senior Kate Sommer leading the way. The Cougars had another successful non-conference slate in 2014, going 9-3. But will need to find a way to carry that momentum heading into the Pac- 12 schedule in 2015. Head coach Jen Greeny welcomes back seven letterwinners, including four starters. She will also have an injection of youth into the squad, adding eight freshmen, the 21st-ranked class in the nation. STRENGTHS » Kyra Holt returns for her junior season after having been the Cougars' leading scorer in her first two years with program. In 2014, she had 392 kills and averaged 3.38 kills per set. She was tied for ninth in the league in double-doubles with 12. Another year with junior setter Haley MacDonald should only help Holt's production in 2015. » Senior libero Kate Sommer (pictured) will play a pivotal role on the team again in 2015. Last year, she was fifth in the Pac-12 in digs per set at 4.27 (512 total) and contributed to the team attack, dishing out 79 total assists. » Four of the eight newcomers to the 2015 squad are 6-3 or taller, and 10 Cougs in all are 6-0 and taller. The team may be young but it should tough for opponents to penetrate at the net. CONCERNS » Holt and the newcomers will look to be more efficient during the 2015 season after ranking 12th in the Conference in hitting percentage at .195. » The Cougars were fifth in the Pac-12 in blocks per set at 2.53. However, Chelsey Bettinson and Ver'Leea Hardaway, the team's two leading blockers in 2014, both graduated. The duo combined for 278 of WSU's 308 blocks on the season. But, with the three middle blockers 6-3 and taller, the Cougars should be able to fill the void. » Bettinson and Jaicee Harris were big offensive producers for the Cougars in 2014. Bettinson was second on the team with 324 kills and Jaicee Harris was third at 296. The duo graduated from WSU so Casey Schoenlein and some of the newcomers will have shoes to fill. » Greeny has a young squad with just one senior and eight newcomers, including seven freshmen. She will have to acclimate to the underclassmen quickly if the Cougs are going to improve in the Pac-12 standings.
