SEASON REVIEW SEASON REVIEW FRESNO STATE WOMEN'S TENNIS A YOUNG BULLDOGS TEAM BECOME CHAMPIONS ........................ .......................................... 2011 STATISTICS 2011 WAC WOMEN'S TENNIS SCHEDULES & RESULTS 2010-11 SEASON REVIEW THE 2010-11 WOMEN'S TENNIS TEAM WAS HIGHLIGHTED BY A WAC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP, THE TEAM COMPETING IN THE NCAA TOURNA- MENT, TWO PLAYERS HONORED BY THE WAC, AND A FRESHMAN ADVANCING TO THE NCAA SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP. The Fresno State women's tennis team, led by eighth- season head coach Simon Thibodeau finished the 2010- 11 season that was highlighted by an undefeated WAC record, a WAC Tournament Championship, an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, one player honored as the WAC tennis player of the week, a freshman overcoming obstacles and being a leader and two players receiving honors from the WAC. A team consisting of only one junior, four sophomores and two freshmen showed spectators it didn't matter the age of the team, the Dogs were ready to take on any team thrown their way. The Dogs brought the WAC Championship title home for its ninth time in the past ten seasons and went undefeat- ed in conference play, going 5-0 in the regular season and 3-0 in the tournament. Fresno State entered into the ITA Rankings mid-spring season at No. 63, climbed the rankings as high as No. 59 and finished the season ranked 67th. In a busy fall season, the Dogs competed in the Cal Nike Invitational, the Saint Mary's Invitational, the ITA North- west Regional, Fresno State's annual Bulldog Classic and the California Winter Invite. Every Bulldog earned victo- ries in all tournaments. Marianne Jodoin, freshman was the lone Fresno State player who competed in the ITA All-American Pre-Qual- ifying and advanced to the qualifying round. The tournament season provided the Bulldogs a chance to gain more valuable experience and pre- pare them for spring season. As the spring season approached, head coach Thibodeau held high standards and set his sights high for the Dogs. The Dogs competed against some of the top-ranked teams in the country including No. 30 Texas A&M, No. 7 Baylor, No. 29 SMU, No. 42 UNLV, No. 10 UCLA, No. 16 USC, No. 23 University of San Diego, No. 26 Pepperdine, No. 1 Stanford and No. 10 Cali- fornia. The Dogs knocked-off three non-conference com- petitors, including an outstanding performance against No. 35 Arizona, when they were not in the rankings, BYU and Pacific. Competing in conference play throughout the sea- son, the Dogs finished the regular season defeating Nevada, 5-2, Utah State, 6-1 sweeping Louisiana Tech and Idaho, 7-0 and finishing the regular season at home against San Jose State, 6-1. These victories gave the Dogs their 5-0 record and the No.2-seeded position for the WAC Tournament. Fresno State didn't slow down, as the victories con- tinued in Boise, Idaho for the WAC Tournament. In the first round of the WAC Tournament the Dogs swept the seventh-seeded Lady Techsters, 4-0 and advanced to the semifinals. In the semifinals the Dogs narrowly passed the Ne- vada Wolf Pack in a 4-3 victory. The Bulldogs and the Wolf Pack battled to last point in the last match. The Dogs obtained an early lead earning the dou- bles point and fought on courts one, three and six to clinch the match from the Wolf Pack. In doubles, Jodoin and Laura Pola along with Me- lissa McQueen and Olga Kirpicheva clinched the doubles point for the Dogs, putting them ahead 1-0. 2011 32 2012 No. 55 Jodoin defeated Nevada's top-seeded player Flor- ence de Vrye, 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore McQueen earned the Dogs point No. 3 in the day after conquering Lais Ogata on court three, 6-1, 6-1. Nevada picked up victories on courts two, four and five, tying the match up 3-3. Coming down to the final match on court six, Abby Hayley fell in her first set, 1-6 but with an outstanding and stel- lar performance rallied back in the second set, 6-3 and kept her momentum strong in the third set. Hayley pulled ahead and clinched the match, 6-4 giving the Dogs their victory. This victory pushed the Dogs to the champion- ship match and one step closer to the WAC Champion- ship title. In the final round, the Dogs battled Boise State on their home territory. The Dogs started strong by winning the doubles point. On court one, Pola and Jodoin turned away the Broncos' Lauren Megale and Marlena Pietzuch, 8-1. McQueen and Kirpicheva clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 victory over Sonia Klamczynska and Elyse Edwards. The Broncos came out early in singles earning its first point on court five. In a straight set victory on court one, No. 55 Jodoin de- feated the Broncos top-ranked player Lauren Megale, 6-1, 6-2. The Dogs lead 2-1 over the Broncos. The singles victories continued for the Dogs, as McQueen earned their third point on court three. After falling in her first set, McQueen rallied back and rose above Stephanie Jasper in set number two, 6-2 and sweeping her in the third set, 6-0. Boise State then tied up earning victories on courts six and four. In a nail-biting, three-set battle Pola defeated Sonia Klam- czynska, 7-5, 6-7 (8-10), 7-5, to give Fresno State its WAC Championship and its automatic bid to the NCAA Tourna- ment. Because of the Dogs WAC Championship, Fresno State received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Fres- no State has competed in 15 of the last 16 NCAA Tourna- ments. The Dogs were paired against No. 20 University of Notre Dame for the first round, and the Fighting Irish secured a 4-0 victory ending the Dogs 2010-11 season. To finish her rookie collegiate year, No. 58 singles player Marianne Jodoin participated in the NCAA Championship round for singles. Jodoin took on No. 46 Alexandra Poorta of Saint Mary's. In an exciting three-set match, Poorta de- feated Jodoin in the third set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (16- 14) and advanced onto the next round. "Marianne has everything to be extremely proud about her freshman year," said head coach Thibodeau. "She is disap- pointed in her narrow loss today but she is a true Bulldog."
