news & notes NIEUWENDYK '88 THANKS CORNELLIANS AT HALL OF FAME Joe Nieuwendyk '88 was humble as always when he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Nov. 14. He expressed special thanks to his coach, Lou Reycroft, and to current coach and friend, Mike Schafer '86, along with his teammates for helping him develop as a player and a person. Nieuwendyk, presently the Dallas Stars general manager, parlayed a 20- year NHL career into three Stanley Cup championships with a trio of teams, the Conn Smythe Trophy, a Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's top rookie, and the 1995 King Clancy Memorial Trophy. He was a two-time All-American with the Big Red, and was 1987 ECAC Player of the Year. A member of the Cornell Athletics Hall of Fame, Nieuwendyk was named one of the top 50 players in ECAC hockey history. KELLY BREAKS OUT AT MEN'S X-C HEPS Overcoming horrendous conditions that resulted in a horrible fall, junior Brett Kelly jumped back up and finished in a career-best 11th place (25:19.1) to earn second-team All-Ivy honors. Last season at Heps, Kelly was 57th overall, and his continued progress was evident all season long. He finished his outstanding season as the top Big Red runner at the NCAA Northeast Regionals. Cornell was fifth at the Heps, but a strong contingent, led by Kelly, returns to challenge for the Ivy title in 2012. CORNELLIANS LEAD PRO SOCCER Former Big Red soccer and lacrosse star Bruce Arena '73 coached the Los Angeles Galaxy to the MLS Cup championship with a 1-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo in the title game. Arena was named the MLS Coach of the Year. Also on the Galaxy coaching staff is former Big Red player and head mentor Dave Sarachan '76, who is associate head coach. Sarachan coached at Cornell nine years, after being honored as an All-American in 1975 when the Red went to the NCAA tournament. Both Arena and Sarachan are newspapers in the Cornell Athletics Hall of Fame. FOUR WOMEN'S HOCKEY PLAYERS ON CANADIAN NATIONAL TEAM On the weekend that Cornell entertained Dartmouth and Harvard, the Big Red women skaters were missing four key players who were on the Canadian National team for the 4 Nations Cup in Sweden. Missing from the Cornell lineup were All-American junior defensemen Laura Fortino and Lauriane Rougeau, sophomore forward Brianne Jenner, and senior forward Rebecca Johnston. Also missing was Head Coach Doug Derraugh '91, who was named an assistant for the competition. Six Cornellians: seniors goalie Amanda Mazzotta; forwards Chelsea Karpenko, Catherine White, sophomore Jessica Campbell and freshman Jillian Saulnier; and sophomore defenseman Hayleigh Cudmore will represent Canada at the 2012 Meco Cup in Germany Jan. 3-8. ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT ADOPTS 20 FAMILIES In the true spirit of the holidays, 14 Big Red teams are sponsoring 20 families as part of the Salvation Army's Adopt A Family program. Adopting a family includes purchasing three toys and two articles of clothing per child (53 children under age 13 are being supported), generic gifts for the adults, and food for three days. One of the dinners must be a special holiday meal, such as turkey or ham with all the fixings. Participating teams include men's and women's basketball; men's and women's soccer; men's and women's track; and women's rowing, fencing, equestrian, gymnastics, ice hockey, field hockey, lacrosse and volleyball. Also helping out are Athletic Director Andy Noel, Outdoor Odyssey, Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Athletic Alumni Affairs and Development, the Brenners, and Rec Services. Cornell athletic teams have been taking part in this program for a number of years, and participation has mushroomed to this year's all-time record.
