JACKSON HEIN »» WRESTLING Badgering... After waiting in the wings behind two-time All-American Trevor Brandvold, Jackson Hein is finally wrestling as Wisconsin's starter at 197 lbs. Hein wrestled in a few matches his freshman year while Brandvold was injured, but feels taking a redshirt season in the middle of his career has made him a better wrestler. He holds a 5-1 dual record this season, including two wins by major decision. How has working with volunteer assistant coach Trevor Brandvold helped you? "My redshirt season gave me time to develop and let me grow into my body a little bit. I was a little small for 197 lbs. I worked a lot with Trevor my whole career here, and that's helped me out a lot. He's a great wrestler and he teaches me every day. There is still a lot to learn from him." What support has your brother Jordan, who also wrestled at Wisconsin, given you? "He knows what the life of a wrestler is like. He wrestled for three years and then he played football. He taught me how to compete and how to push myself every day, 100 percent. My whole family taught me that mentality growing up." What is your greatest strength as a wrestler? "I think I push the pace of matches. Technique is going to come, but making the other wrestler adjust to my style is going to win me those close matches." What is your favorite aspect of Wisconsin wrestling? "I love the community. We are all a family. There is a lot of support and everyone looks out for each other. I really appreciate everything this program has done for me." 18 » VARSITY DECEMBER 1, 2011
