131 T he University of Iowa women's rowing team has begun the spring season aer a pair of scrimmages in DeLand, Florida, against Old Dominion and Central Florida. e Hawkeyes started the season by sweeping both teams in their scrimmages, proving their hard work in the fall and winter months is beginning to pay off. "e scrimmaging worked out quite well," said UI head coach Andrew Carter. "We were able to experiment with subtle changes in crew configura- tions and test them against some solid competi- tion." e Hawkeyes spent time in the warmer weather working on improving their fall goals of physical, mental, and technical development. "I think we continue to make progress. I saw some improved composure under pressure, which is something we're working on," said Carter. "I saw some staying power in later stages of competition, which is a good continuation of what was being shown in the fall. Both of these areas were weak- nesses last year, so this early info is encouraging." e Hawkeyes also used the scrimmages as a way to test the compatibility of different lineups. "I thought they worked well together and the spirit was high," said Carter. "Like any endeavor, chemistry is important within a crew. I thought the chemistry in some of our crews was quite good and I think it showed in their performances this week. I think getting that right can help us as we forge ahead." Iowa has placed a lot of attention of the unity of the team, which has proven to benefit the overall performance of the crew. "I don't think there was an outstanding perfor- mance for any one crew. is was a good team per- formance from one end to the other," said Carter. "at's what we're going for and what we'll need for the regular season and beyond." e Hawkeyes remain on the road for their first official competition of the spring season. Up next, Iowa will travel to Ithaca, New York, to take on Cornell, Yale, Syracuse, and Boston University in an all day regatta on Saturday, April 4.
