69 "What stood out to me about early in his college career was his maturity and mental focus on the game," Gatens said. "He came to Iowa ready to play mentally and always took care of himself on and off the court in a very mature way. "He was a great teammate and friend to play with for one season and I would have loved to have been able to play more with him. It's not oen you see a senior and freshman connect the way we did and I think that speaks to his maturity." Gatens echoed Settles' comments about White's ability to impact a game in a number of ways. "Aaron always seems to find the ball in the right spots," said Gatens. "His ability to attack the basket and get to the foul line is impressive. Physically what surprised me early on was his length and quickness off the ground. Combine that with a great feel for the game and you have a dangerous player." Settles says White has been an instrumental piece in turning the UI basketball program around. "It's nice to see him not only do well statistically, but more importantly, turn Iowa into a winning program," Settles said. S enior men's basketball player Aaron White steadily moved up the University of Iowa's career scoring chart last month. As the calendar flips to February, White is closing in on Jess Settles and Matt Gatens for eighth and seventh, respectively, on the all-time list. Settles says White reminds him of former Hawkeye Ryan Bowen, who was also a stat sheet stuffer. "Whether he's at the front of the press, attacking the basket, running the floor, posting up, there's no other guy in the league this season who affects more real estate on the court than Aaron White." White is the only player in UI history to amass more than 1,600 points, 750 rebounds, 150 assists, and 125 steals. Settles praised White for his versatility and ability to create problems for the opposition. "I've watched so much tape on him, I've stopped trying to figure his game out because every game he impacts the stat sheet in a different way," Settles said. "He's one of the few guys who could have played in any decade for Iowa. It seems that his game transcends to any decade and every coaching style. It's truly remarkable." Matt Gatens, who ranks seventh in UI scoring (1,635), is in White's sights. When White was a rookie in 2012, Gatens was a senior and was impressed with White's all-around attention to detail.
