Over 617,000 people live in the city limits and over 4.5 million live in the greater metropolitan area. Each year, the Boston Pops perform on the Fourth of July in front of a national television audience. The Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon and attracts over 25,000 participants and 500,000 spectators each year.
