SOME TIME TO GROW

Impact of substitutes in win over Nebraska illustrates importance of developmental work during Badgers’ bye week

You could say Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema is never at a loss for words.

To prove it, Bielema opened the top right drawer of his office desk and removed two paperbacks: a Merriam-Webster Dictionary and The Oxford English Dictionary.

Bielema has owned the Merriam-Webster since his early years as a full-time assistant coach at Iowa. Up until actually purchasing the dictionary, he admitted that he didn’t have much use for one.

The first word that Bielema ever looked up was “confidence.”

The Hawkeyes had a linebacker by the name of Kevin Worthy, who was also a long snapper on special teams. Worthy, a true freshman, had been tabbed to handle snaps in the 2000 season opener.

“He was from a small school in (Attalla) Alabama and he was just nervous as all get out,’’ Bielema remembered. “I sat him down and said, ‘What do you have to be nervous about?’
