59 "He showed unbelievable guts out there," said UI head coach Layne Anderson. "It would have been fun to see what he could have done if he was able to fully train the last three weeks. I was thrilled to death to see where he was at the 6,000-meter mark, and impressed to see him finish the way he did." Lewis was one of 15 Hawkeyes to record a per- sonal best at the conference championships. Sophomore Katie Adams led the Iowa women with a career best in the 6,000-meters. She clocked a time of 21:21, a 38-second improvement from her previous PR set at the 2013 NCAA Regional. "I was really happy with my race," Adams said. "I felt that burn near the end and I knew I raced hard the whole race. I went out aggressive and stuck with that pace. I focused more on how I felt than the pace, and I trusted in my training knowing that I had prepared well for this." e Hawkeyes return to action Nov. 14 at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet in Peoria, Illinois. e NCAA Championships are Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Indiana. U niversity of Iowa senior Kevin Lewis joined an elite list of Hawkeye first-team All-Big selections following a sixth-place finish and a career-best performance in the 8,000-meters at the 2014 Big Ten Cross Country Champion- ships. e 100th running of the men's race was Nov. 2 at the University of Iowa's Ashton Cross Country Course. "I was very happy with that finish," said Lewis, af- ter improving 20 spots from his 2013 performance. "I had a little bit of an injury a few weeks ago, so I didn't know where I stood coming into (the race). I tried to be conservative and just get through the middle part of the race feeling OK and progress from there. I was able to make one last burst in a tight finish for sixth place." Lewis is the first Hawkeye men's cross country runner to earn an All-Big Ten honor since Micah VanDenend in 2006. Lewis' time of 23:52 ranks eighth all-time in school history. University of Iowa sophomore Katie Adams led the Hawkeyes to an 11th place finish at the 2014 Big Ten Cross Country Championships.
