PREVIEWING THE 2011 TAR HEELS u Carolina returns 44 lettermen from last season’s 2010 team that won eight games, including a 30-27 double overtime victory over Tennessee in the Mu- sic City Bowl. The Tar Heels return six starters on both offense and defense, and return their starting place-kicker and punter. u Carolina has advanced to three consecutive bowl games for the first time since going to seven straight from 1992-98. u Carolina must replace four-year starter T.J. Yates (more than 40 school records) at quarterback. Sophomore Bryn Renner, who has just two career pass attempts, enters the fall as the starter, but will face competition from junior Braden Hanson, sophomore A.J. Blue and January enrollee Marquise Williams. u The Tar Heels lost all three of their leading rushers from last season (Johnny White, Shaun Draughn and Anthony Elzy), but welcome back 2009 leading rusher Ryan Houston and redshirt freshman Giovani Bernard. Houston redshirted last season, while Bernard expects to see his first collegiate action after tearing his ACL in last fall’s training camp. u Houston, a native of Charlotte, N.C., has scored 17 touchdowns in his last 25 games. He is tied for second place among all returning ACC runners in career touchdowns with 18. u Carolina’s three returning starters on the offen- sive line – OT James Hurst, OG Jonathan Cooper and C Cam Holland – have combined for 54 starts. Cooper was an All-ACC selection last year and Hurst was a freshman All-America. Quinton Coples u Quinton Coples, who played defensive tackle last year but expects to move to his natural position at end, is a 2011 preseason All-America by several media outlets. Coples ranked third in the ACC and 16th in the country in sacks last year. He finished with 59 tackles, 15.5 tackles for losses, 10.0 sacks, 12 quarterback pressures and two forced fumbles. u Carolina has intercepted 58 passes over the last three seasons (20 in 2008, 19 in 2009, 19 in 2010). However, the Tar Heels must replace three starters in the secondary in 2011. u Cornerback Charles Brown, who has six career interceptions for 191 yards, returns for his senior season after sitting out the 2010 season. u Linebacker Kevin Reddick is an All-ACC candi- date after leading the team in tackles (74) for the second-straight season. u Place-kicker Casey Barth is one of the most con- sistent kickers in the country. He has made 50 of 62 career field goal attempts and a school-record 71 consecutive extra points. Barth needs just five field goals to surpass his brother Connor’s school- record total of 53. u Wide receiver Dwight Jones had a breakout season a year ago with 62 receptions and 946 receiving yards, which ranked as the fifth-best single-season marks in school history. He had 198 yards in a win at Virginia and 233 in a win at Florida State. DAY DATE OPPONENT SITE Sat. Sat. Sat. Sept. 3 James Madison Sept. 10 Rutgers Sept. 17 Virginia Sat. Sat. Oct. 1 Sat.
