D e a r F r i e n d s, Crea3ng Champions. That's the tagline we've used for a number of years to promote the Saints Alive! Athle3c Fund. But it's more than a tagline, it's a mission statement. The goal of our athle3c department is to educate, mentor, coach, and graduate quality students who happen to be athletes. We want them to leave here not simply as athle3c champions, but as champion people. There were champion moments this past season: baseball, women's golf and men's lacrosse all won MAAC championships and competed in their respec3ve NCAA Tournaments. Men's basketball made an historic run through the College Basketball Invita3onal, becoming just the second team in school history to win a na3onal postseason tournament 3tle, joining the 1950 Na3onal Catholic Invita3onal Tournament Champions. We endured sadness this past year as well. Siena legend Billy Harrell '52 le$ us, but not before he got to greet the crowd at the CBI championship (page 7). Billy was a great champion as an athlete and a person. He was remembered fondly during a celebra3on in the Alumni Recrea3on Center and will be missed dearly by the Siena community. Last year in this space I wrote about change. More change took place this year. Associate athle3c director and senior woman administrator Joyce Eggleston re3red in January. Joyce served Siena's student athletes for 35 years as coach and administrator, and her steady influence will be greatly missed. Associate athle3c director for opera3ons Dennis Bates resigned his posi3on to move to Siena's finance office a$er seven years of service. Both provided invaluable service to our coaches and students. Of course we will all miss Fr. Kevin Mullen '75, O.F.M. Ph.D., Siena's 10th president, who was elected Provincial Minister of Holy Name Province. During his 3me at Siena, Fr. Kevin was a generous leader with keen insight. He led in the true spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. The achievements of our student athletes told in this report are a result of the support given to them through Saints Alive! On the back of this report are the names of the many people who give to Saints Alive! It's because of their belief in Siena's mission that our students succeed.
