Providing food, water, energy and other human needs to the world's entire population without harming the environment is a formidable task. Through Purdue's Global Sustainability Institute (GSI), the Center for the Environment, Purdue Climate Change Research Center, Energy Center, Purdue Water Community and the Center for Global Food Security are connecting existing expertise at Purdue with a pressing global issue and form the core of the initiative. GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY INSTITUTE PURDUE WATER COMMUNITY The Purdue Water Community facilitates water-related research, teaching and engagement to improve and sustain human and ecosystem health. Everyone in the Purdue community who works on water-related research, education, or outreach is welcome to participate by joining the Purdue Water Community. THE COMMUNITY FACILITIES COLLABORATION THE COMMUNITY ENHANCES LEARNING We are enhancing Purdue water-related research, extension and education benefit by enhancing collaboration: • Across disciplines— in order to address grand challenges, the community bridges many disciplines • Across methodologies— the community integrates monitoring, modeling and other methods to enhance outcomes • Across scales— the community values multiple scales that build whole systems knowledge We are training the next generation of professionals. Students, staff and faculty broaden their views through participation in the community. They are exposed to a diversity of aquatic systems and water issues, learning tools and methods beyond their chosen disciplines and are gaining a wide appreciation of the field of water science and engineering. 1
