Providing food, water, energy and other human needs to the world's entire population
without harming the environment is a formidable task. Through Purdue's Global
Sustainability Institute (GSI), the Center for the Environment, Purdue Climate Change
Research Center, Energy Center, Purdue Water Community and the Center for Global
Food Security are connecting existing expertise at Purdue with a pressing global issue
and form the core of the initiative.
GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY INSTITUTE
PURDUE WATER COMMUNITY
The Purdue Water Community facilitates water-related research, teaching and
engagement to improve and sustain human and ecosystem health. Everyone
in the Purdue community who works on water-related research, education, or
outreach is welcome to participate by joining the Purdue Water Community.
THE COMMUNITY FACILITIES COLLABORATION
THE COMMUNITY ENHANCES LEARNING
We are enhancing Purdue water-related research, extension and education benefit by enhancing
collaboration:
• Across disciplines— in order to address grand challenges, the community bridges many disciplines
• Across methodologies— the community integrates monitoring, modeling and other methods to
enhance outcomes
• Across scales— the community values multiple scales that build whole systems knowledge
We are training the next generation of professionals. Students, staff and faculty broaden their views
through participation in the community. They are exposed to a diversity of aquatic systems and water
issues, learning tools and methods beyond their chosen disciplines and are gaining a wide appreciation
of the field of water science and engineering.
