78 // VARSITY May 15, 2014 INSIDE WOMEN'S GOLF Wisconsin closes out record-breaking season Badgers record program-best scoring average BY TESSA RUID @BADGERWGOLF A fter narrowly missing qualifying for the 2014 NCAA Championships, the Wisconsin women's golf team finished one of the most successful seasons in program history. The Badgers received their second-straight NCAA regional bid and placed only one place out of a national qualifying spot. They tied for ninth place with a 57-over par 301-305-315―921 at the 54- hole NCAA West Regional held May 8-10 at the par-72, 6,252- yard Tumble Creek Club in Cle Elum, Wash. UW recorded im- pressive team and individual performances and broke many records during the 2013-14 season, including tallying the best scoring average in school history at 299.25 (9,576 strokes/32 rounds). TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL NOTES ● UW recorded the best single-sea- son 18-hole team scoring average in school history at 299.25, breaking the previous record of 302.93 set in 2009- 10 (9,694/32). ● This Badger team qualified for three NCAA regionals in four years, and had the program's best NCAA finish at 23rd in 2013, UW's first NCAA tourna- ment appearance since 2003. ● Senior Kris Yoo closed out her UW career second in career scoring with 75.74 strokes per round, while senior Alexis Nelson finished fourth with 76.87 strokes per round. ● Nelson's 2013-14 season average of 74.79 per round ranks second all- time. ● Freshman Brooke Ferrell set the UW freshman season scoring record with her 75.34 strokes per round. The re- cord of 76.687 was set by teammate Alyssa Elliott in 2009-10. ● The Badgers set all-time 36- and 54- hole records by placing third with a 5-under par 286-288-285―859 at the Westbrook Spring Invitational held Feb. 23-24. The previous 36-hole re- cord was 578 set in 2001, and the 54- hole mark was 865 set last fall at the Lady Paladin Invitational on Sept. 22. ● UW set its 18-hole record with a 281 in winning the Lady Paladin Invita- tional with 290-294-281―865 Sept. 22. ● Wisconsin has won at least one tour- nament every year since 2009-10.
