70 // VARSITY April 17, 2014 BY MINDY VAN DYKE @BADGERWTENNIS Tripolskaya claims career- best two-match stretch Sophomore knocks off 20th-ranked player D espite having a rough weekend on the road as a team, UW sopho- more Anastasia Tripolskaya claimed the best two-match stretch of her career. Last Saturday and Sunday, UW fell, 6-1, in matches against No. 60 Michigan State and No. 14 Michigan. Wisconsin's only points from the weekend came from Tripolskaya, and both points were hard earned in a third set tiebreaker. "When you look at 'Nasty's' results you know that she is really mentally tough," said UW head coach Tina Samara. "She has lost a lot of first sets and then has come back to win it in the third set." Against No. 60 Michigan State, Tripolskaya played Catherine Parenteau in No. 3 singles. Tripolskaya ended up dropping the first set, 6-3, but fought back to take the second set, 6-4. She then went on to win the third set, 1-0. Samara then made the decision to move Tripolskaya up to play No. 2 singles against No. 14 Michigan. In her signa- ture style, Tripolskaya went on to defeat her first ranked opponent, knocking off 20th-ranked Ronit Yurovsky after rally- ing back from a first set shutout. Tripol- skaya turned the tables on Yurovsky to defeat her, 7-5, in the second set and to finish her, 1-0, in the third. "Players come in and out of the rank- ings every week, but Yurovksy was con- sistently performing at a high level," Sa- mara said. Four of the six conference wins for Tripolskaya have been in a third set. She also defeated Shelby Talcott of Iowa, 6-7, 1-6, 6-3, and Carmen Sandor of Penn State, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, in three sets. With the two wins from last weekend, Tripolskaya and Nova Patel lead the team with a total of six conference wins. Wisconsin will host its last weekend of regular season action at Nielsen Ten- nis Stadium against No. 13 Northwest- ern and No. 43 Illinois this Saturday and Sunday.
