Celebrating serviCe
Civic engagement has been a central part of a JWU education for
decades. Classes, co-curricular activities, and one or even two jobs don't
deter JWU students from volunteering; in fact, they completed 243,441
hours of service during the 2012–13 academic year. Not only are these
opportunities beneficial to the communities, they are individually
enriching for our students who graduate with a strong academic
foundation, marketable work experience, valuable leadership skills and a
passion for community service — at all campuses.
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Bennie Williams '15, president of
the Charlotte Campus Minorities About Business Club, and nearly 30 of
his peers volunteered with a local nonprofit organization that works with
at-risk youth. He reflects, "As a group leader and participant, I realized
that the day was not just about volunteering, but [about] working
together as a unit … We were there to lead by example and help show
younger students the meaning of service."
More than 100 Denver Campus students similarly honored Martin
Luther King Jr.'s legacy, as they were randomly assigned to sites that
were announced during the opening ceremony. Projects ranged from
cleaning, serving meals, beautifying local nature preserves and spreading
random acts of kindness within the Denver community. – read more
