62 // VARSITY March 27, 2014 INSIDE TRACK & FIELD Badgers open outdoor season at Disney Wisconsin enjoys spring break in Florida BY AJ HARRISON @BADGER_TRACK A fter a long, cold winter in Wisconsin, the UW track and field teams was able to head south to Or- lando, Fla., to train during the team's spring break last week. The Badgers opened their outdoor season with a strong showing at the Walt Disney Open, but UW Director of Track & Field and Cross Coun- try Mick Byrne believes the training in warm weather was as valuable as competing at the meet. "With the cold winter we had up here, it was great to get down to the warm weath- er," Byrne said. "Our athletes were able to get some valuable training in nice, sunny weath- er that will benefit the team down the road." The men's squad won four relay titles at the meet, as the Badgers captured the 4x200, the 4x400, the 1600 sprint medley and the 4x1500 relays. The UW women found success in the individual events, as Sophie Roth won the 400 meters, Georgia Ellenwood won the 200 meters and the 100 hurdles, Molly Hanson was victorious in the 800 meters and Courtney Walden won the pole vault. After a week off, Wisconsin will head back to the Sunshine State to compete in the Florida Relays April 3-5. "We're excited to run against some great SEC competition in two weeks," By- rne said. MEN'S SQUAD RANKS FOURTH IN PROGRAM OF THE YEAR STANDINGS ● After finishing second last year in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association John McDonnell Program of the Year standings, the Badgers enter the outdoor season in fourth place of the 2013-14 standings. Wisconsin, with 20 points after fin- ishing ninth at the NCAA cross country championship and 11th at the NCAA indoor meet, trails Oregon, which leads the way with 6 points, followed by Oklahoma State (9.5) and Arkansas (14). The women's squad also earned a spot in the Terry Crawford Program of the Year standings, as the Badgers sit in 16th place with 64.5 points.
