11 L isa Bluder needed a perfect opportunity to pry her from Drake University, where she was head women's basketball coach from 1990-2000. She found it at the University of Iowa. Aer being named Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year three times, NCAA Regional Coach of the Year twice, and leading the Hawkeyes to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and seven wins against top-10 opponents, Bluder did something Feb. 10 no other coach in UI history has ever done. She won her 270th game. at's when five Hawkeye women's basketball players scored 11 or more points during a 90-84 win against Northwestern on Mediacom Court in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. e victory against the Wildcats came four days aer a 73-70 upset at No. 9 Penn State and le Iowa with a record of 19-6 overall, 7-4 in the Big Ten Conference. Win No. 19 was special. It was No. 270 for Bluder during her 14-year stint at the UI, making her the winningest basketball coach in school history. "You don't think about (milestone games) once they get going," Bluder said. "We're going to get it, right? It's just a matter of time. We wanted it sooner rather than later, so there was really no wait at all." e milestone victory came 41 games aer she amassed career win No. 600 against Purdue on Jan. 20, 2013. Following the favorable outcome against North- western, a video tribute was played on scoreboards in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. e headline speaker was C. Vivian Stringer, who won 269 games at the UI from 1983-95. Nobody Does it Better By Darren Miller "Oh my goodness, this is amazing to think 270 wins, but does this surprise me? Not at all," Stinger said via a recorded message. "You have been a success wherever you have been, whether it is at St. Am- brose, Drake and certainly at the University of Iowa. I know the University of Iowa has been a special place to you, as it has been to me. But when you consider there are only 13 Division I coaches that have achieved a milestone of 600 (wins) and you are one of them, that's pretty special. I know there are many wins and many more proud moments that are to come, so I wish you nothing but the best, congratulations. I am so proud of you and our Iowa Hawkeyes. Take care." Bluder began her coaching career at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, going 169-36 from 1984-90; she was 187-106 at Drake. Heading into the Feb. 27 game against Ohio State, Bluder is 272- 164 at the UI. Here is a look at some of her more special wins as the Hawkeye head coach: Nov. 17, 2000 – Iowa 70, Marquette 57 In Lisa Bluder's first game as head coach at the University of Iowa, the Hawkeyes overcame a six- point halime deficit and defeated Marquette 70-57. Randi Peterson turned in a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Lindsey Meder scored a game-high 18 points and Cara Consuegra added 12.
