BADGERING
MARY MASSEI
After setting UW single-season records for batting average (.421), slugging
percentage (.672), at-bats (195), runs (51), hits (82) and total bases (131) in
2013, Mary Massei looks to lead the Badgers to a second-straight Big Ten title
in her final season in Madison. The right fielder was recently named to the
2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top 50 Watch List, as one of
seven representatives from the Big Ten.
What's it like knowing you're entering your final year at UW?
"I'm really excited for my senior year. It's crazy that three seasons have
already passed. I'm lucky to be on this team and in this program. I know
we have a tough schedule ahead of us, but I think we're all embracing it
and we're all really excited."
What does being named to the Player of the Year watch list mean
for you and the team?
"It's a huge honor to even be put on that list. I know that just putting that
Wisconsin name out there is huge for this program. It shows how much
work we've been putting in these last couple years and what we are ca-
pable of. I know many more girls on this team that could be on that list
that are going to keep putting in their work this season and I'm excited."
Being a native of California, how excited are you to head to
Florida for the first tournament and play in warm weather?
"We're all excited. It's been pretty cold these last couple of weeks,
but we're lucky this year that we have our new indoor facility.
Before we weren't even taking ground balls on the dirt (before
our first game), so we're excited to go to Florida already having
ground balls and being able to practice on dirt. It'll be a lot
better this year."
