21 3's Company By Matt Weitzel M elsahn Basabe, Aaron White and Roy Devyn Marble accomplished a feat that has happened only four other times in University of Iowa men's basketball history — hav- ing three 1,000-point scorers on the same team. Marble scored his 1,000th-career point in Iowa's regular season finale against Nebraska a year ago. White reached the 1,000-point threshold this past December against Notre Dame, while Basabe netted his 1,000th point Jan. 9 against Northwest- ern. All three milestones were reached in Carver- Hawkeye Arena in victories. Iowa has had four previous teams boast three 1,000-point scorers: 2005, 1996, 1989 and 1988. White, a junior from Strongsville, Ohio, says being a part of Iowa history is special. "I never thought I would be in that position when I got here," said White. "I thank coach (Fran) Mc- Caffery for giving me the opportunity early on. To be one of the guys that turned this program around from when I got here is a blessing." Basabe and Marble are not only classmates, but best friends. For both to be1,000-point scorers makes it more special. "Devyn is a talented player, and he is also a very good friend," said Basabe. "He is family to me, so it's a good feeling to be up there with someone who is so close to you. He has been on this journey with me, and for both of us to have our names in the record book is special." McCaffery likes Basabe's focus and says there is a different level of maturity with his approach. "You're seeing a guy who is really comfortable right now," said McCaffery. "He's excited to be playing the way he's playing." Marble is proud to be part of this group and loves the fact that anyone on any night can step up and have a big performance on this team. "When you have that kind of balance it's hard for defenses to key in on guys because there are so many guys on our team that can hurt you," said Marble. McCaffery says Marble has supreme confidence and is excited how his game has evolved. "e more minutes you give him, the better he is," said McCaffery. "He's out there feeling like he can do whatever we need him to do in that particular situation." Basabe makes sure he continues working hard in practice because the journey is not complete. "Everything I do is just making the most of my op- portunity," he said. "ere is still more to be done; I won't stop."
