Dear JWU families:
As we prepare for the holidays and time with family and friends, we look forward to ringing in the
New Year. 2014 isn't just any year — it's our centennial year. Johnson & Wales University began in
1914 with only one student and one typewriter, but we are now a national university attracting
students from around the globe. Our founders, Miss Johnson and Miss Wales, understood the
importance of a professionally-focused education in preparing graduates. Over the past 100 years,
their educational philosophy has proven to be a pioneering and an increasingly emulated model of
higher education.
The university's current strategic plan, 2017: The Centennial Plan, marks an unprecedented
investment in strengthening JWU's future as a recognized leader in higher education. We are
instituting enhancements at all levels that will increase the value of a Johnson & Wales education.
Most recently, the university's academic structure was reorganized to allow for more focused tracks
of study and an enhanced interdisciplinary approach.
We must focus on the continuous improvement of our academic programs in order to strengthen
our academic viability and sustainability, and provide our students with an exceptional education
that inspires professional success and lifelong personal and intellectual growth.
This is a very exciting time for Johnson & Wales, and I am grateful that you and your student are part
of the JWU family. I hope you have the opportunity to visit your student throughout the year and
participate in centennial-themed celebrations.
Wishing you and your family a joyous holiday season. Wherever you are on January 1, please join us
in ringing in our centennial year.
Sincerely,
John J. Bowen '77
