Big Ten Trophy restored

mong the long forgotten moments in Badger
hockey history resides
the program's five Big Ten
hockey championships. No,
it was not a conference-sanctioned championship, but between 1959 and 1981 (1969
to 1981 for UW), a Big Ten
champion was crowned annually using results of games

Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio
State and Wisconsin. In the
13 seasons that that Badgers
were part of the competition,
they captured three titles and
shared two others. Ohio State
only took part during three
seasons as the champion was
essentially crowned among
the four teams who then skated in the WCHA. The competition for the title ended when
Michigan and Michigan State departed
for the CCHA at the end of the 1980–81
season.
Winners of the championship were
awarded a trophy (See photo). With the
start of Big Ten play this season, the hockey office dug out the old trophies, which
were in varying degrees of health, and
put together one good one. They added
rosters for the past champions and now
have the trophy displayed in the men's
hockey case near gate B of the Kohl Center.
SIGN UP FOR YOUTH TUNNELS
● For three of Wisconsin's first four home
games, the athletic department invited
pre-registered youth ages 4-12 to begin the game at ice level and welcome
the Wisconsin hockey team to the Kohl
Center ice for the game. The program
grew quickly to nearly 100 kids for the
last home game. Sign up is now open
to the public for select home games.
