• Boston was founded as a town in 1630 and incorporated as a city
in 1822. Over 617,000 people live in the city limits and over 4.5
million live in the greater metropolitan area.
• Each year, the Boston Pops perform on the Fourth of July in front
of a national television audience.
• The Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon and
attracts over 25,000 participants and 500,000 spectators each year.
• The Boston University Bridge on Commonwealth Avenue is the only
place in the world where a boat can sail under a train passing under
a car driving under an airplane.
• Famous Firsts - The Boston Common, was the first public park in
the US (1634), First Public school, The Boston Latin school (1635),
First post office, First street light, First use of Penicillin, First
department store, First lighthouse, First public library, First subway
