Billed as the "world's largest two-day rowing event," with more than 9,000 athletes competing, 1,400 volunteers staffing the event and 300,000 spectators lining the shores of the Charles River in Boston, all three Wisconsin rowing programs will F 60 // VARSITY October 17, 2013 compete in this weekend's event, which includes 55 different races. This year, in addition to pulling hard on the water, the Wisconsin rowing team is also pulling for a cure. Like many other teams participating in this year's Head of the Charles Regatta, all three Badgers squads are fundraising to fight breast cancer through Pull for a Cure. The openweight women set a goal of $4,000 and has already reached it. With under a week left until the Charles, they have raised over $5,000. In total, the event has raised over $41,000, with the three Wisconsin squads contributing a total of over $6,500. In fact, out of the 20 teams working to raise funds, the Wisconsin women's openweight squad has raised the second-most money. The men's rowing team isn't far behind, slotting 10th, while the lightweights sit in 12th place. Pull for a Cure was started by Brown University in 2009 and incorporated into the Head of the Charles in 2011. It will be capped with many teams taking to the to the Lake Charles waters wearing pink gear to support the effort to halt breast cancer during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. "We have so much support on the water, but this is a great opportunity for people to show that Badger love in what we do off the water as well," senior women's openweight rower Monica Whitehouse said.
