"I've treated a lot of cancer patients,
and you see a lot of people die," says
radiation oncologist Paul Read, MD,
PhD. "But when it's a family member,
you look at things differently." Six months
after his father's death, Read was still
thinking about some of the things his
father went through and wondering if
there was a way to make things better
for patients.

It started out as an engineering project,
a clunky stick figure idea, as Paul Yates,
MD, PhD, likes to call it. Yates, an assistant
professor of ophthalmology, was in the
audience at a UVA School of Medicine
forum five years ago as Shayn PeirceCottler, PhD, reported on some interesting
findings her lab had discovered in working
with adipose-derived stem cells.
