Testy waters: UW will be
challenged in 2013-14
UW opens season at perennial power Georgia
nother season of Wisconsin swimming and
diving is here and, from
the looks of the schedule, not
much has changed in terms of
mentality.
In 2012-13, UW head coach
Whitney L. Hite looked to
take a major step in terms of
rebuilding the program by
scheduling some of the country's top squads early on in the

season.
That strategy resulted in 12
new school records, a Big Ten
record, a pair of individual Big
Ten championships and UW's
first NCAA individual champion in over four decades in
Drew teDuits.
The Badgers will look to
take another step forward this
season, beginning this weekend as they travel to Athens,
Ga., to take on perennial national power,
Georgia.
"Heading down to Athens will obviously be a tough test but a great measuring stick for our program," Hite said. "Going up against one of the best men's and
women's teams in the country will allow
us to learn a lot about ourselves early
on and hopefully have an opportunity
to make gradual adjustments so that we
can be at our best come March."
UW returns a pair of All-Americans in
juniors Ivy Martin and teDuits, the 2012
NCAA 200-yard backstroke champion.
The duo headlines a vastly improved
men's and women's team that will be
competing against arguably one of the
toughest schedules of any team in the
country.
Following UW's lone home meet of the
season on Oct. 18-19, the Badgers hit the
road beginning with a pair of top-10 programs in Cal (Nov. 1) and Stanford (Nov.
2). The gauntlet continues with visits
to Northwestern (Nov. 15), Notre Dame
(Nov. 16) and the Texas Invitational (Dec.
5-7), where UW will compete against Arizona and Texas, among others.
"I've always told them, to be the best
you have to beat the best, and we will
continue to train and compete with that
philosophy in mind," Hite said. "This
team has put in the work in the offseason, now it's time to go out and show off
what we've got."
