INSIDE WOMEN'S HOCKEY BY AJ HARRISON @BADGERWHOCKEY SCHEDULE COMING UP Sept. 23 Team Japan Free Admission Oct. 4 Minnesota State Oct. 5 Minnesota State Oct. 11 Minnesota Oct. 12 Minnesota 7 p.m. 7 p.m. 3 p.m. 6 p.m. 4 p.m. MACLEOD RETURNS TO MADISON ● Former Badger Carla MacLeod serves as an assistant coach for the Japanese national team, which will compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. MacLeod was a two-time team captain and was a two-time All-American while at Wisconsin. In 2005, she was selected as the USCHO National Defensive Player of the Year. She went on to help Canada win gold at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics. A September start: UW hosts Japan in exhibition Badgers open season on Monday at LaBahn ven though feelings ofsummer have yet to fade, hockey season is right around the corner. Wisconsin hosts Team Japan at LaBahn Arena on Monday in a 7 p.m. exhibition contest. It might sound early for a hockey game, but Monday's game ties the earliest start for the Badgers, as UW opened up its 2011 campaign on Sept. 23 E 50 // VARSITY September 19, 2013 with an 11-0 win over Lindenwood. Wisconsin has opened its season in September in six of the past eight seasons. The contest marks the first time the Badgers have faced a national team since 2010, when UW played the U.S. National Team with Wisconsin head coach Mark Johnson serving as the mentor for Team USA on its way to the Olympics. OH CAPTAIN MY CAPTAINS ● The Badgers have elected senior Alex Rigsby as their team captain, while seniors Madison Packer, Kelly Jaminski and junior Blayre Turnbull will serve as assistant captains. Rigsby, an assistant captain for UW last year, becomes the first goaltender to serve as the team captain in the program's 14-year history. UW RANKED NO. 7 IN PRESEASON POLL ● Wisconsin checked in at No. 7 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine preseason poll this week. Fellow WCHA member and defending national champ Minnesota earned the No. 1 ranking, while North Dakota was tabbed No. 5. UW will also face No. 4 Boston University and No. 10 Northeastern in Vail, Colo. during the weekend of Nov. 15-16.
