ENHANCING THE STUDENT ATHLETE EXPERIENCE SAINTS IN THE COMMUNITY The BlueShield of Northeastern New York Saints in the Community Program was in full swing this year. Siena athletics' student services group encourages all student athletes to leverage their academic and athletic experiences into opportunities to enrich résumés and broaden their knowledge of how the "real world" works. 2012-13 SIENA STUDENT ATHLETES volunteered in for a total of Siena student athletes sought out professional experience beyond the confines of campus, attending NCAA events and landing prestigious internships, leadership roles, research projects, and overseas study opportunities. Tennis rising senior Carly Holloway, Softball's Shannon Jones '13, and water polo rising senior Melanie Boehrig attended the 2013 NCAA Career in Sports Forum June 8-11. The three representatives tied Siena with the University of Oregon and the University of Louisville for the most among all Division I schools. The Student Athlete Mentoring (SAM) committee was formed this year to help augment these leadership roles. Each team selected at least one representative for training to assist peers with making better decisions about alcohol and substance use and general wellness. NCAA CAREER IN SPORTS FORUM Division I Representation School Siena's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) poses at the Double H Ranch during a preseason retreat and service trip. Siena's water polo and women's lacrosse teams have a longstanding relationship with the camp that provides programs and support for children dealing with life-threatening illnesses and their families. 3 3 3 STUDENT ATHLETE SUMMER INTERNSHIPS Summer 2012: 21 Summer 2013: 35 5 11 Representatives Siena Oregon Louisville 0 47 EVENTS 2,841 HOURS 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 The Siena lacrosse team recognized honorary teammate Marco Daidone, a fifth-grader from Bayport, N.Y., who is battling osteosarcoma, prior to their game at Stony Brook. Dana Tricarico was part of a growing number of student athletes taking advantage of summer internships and assistantships. She worked as a research assistant tagging sharks off the coast of South Africa. Falko Friedrichs landed a prestigious summer position with the Capital Region-based international technology company, Global Foundries. Brett Bisping '16 reads to children at St. Mary's Academy in Hoosick Falls, one of 10 Capital Region schools to participate in the popular Adopt-A-School program this year with Siena's men's and women's basketball teams.
