In Iowa…Oh The Challenges, Oh The Opportunities! By Gary Barta The biggest challenge is the obvious one for those of us who yearn to get outdoors and enjoy sunshine and warm temperatures. Those bright, sunny 50, 60 and 70 degree days have been few and far between this year…which has been trying for the University of Iowa's student-athletes in softball, baseball, tennis, golf, and track and field. These talented young men and women train and practice in anticipation of showcasing their talents during their competitive season, the bulk of which rests in the months of March, April, and May. The Hawkeyes have slugged their way through the rain (and snow) and cold. Let's hope Mother Nature chooses to smile on them during these final weeks of what is supposed to be their days in the sun. the first page… Speaking of days in the sun, if you didn't read this HERE, I invite you to do so. And, until you have the time to digest the entire story, here's a piece that I really enjoyed: 4 "Wiz has won Big titles here, he has won Drake Relays titles, but more than anything, the Drake Relays Hall of Fame is a testament of who people are," Wilson said. "Wiz is one of the very, very best of all time. This is going to sound stupid, but he is a sweetheart, a wonderful human being. You might compete hard against a Larry Wieczorek team, but you will never get a better person in the world to work with or work for." I mentioned opportunities and I was thinking specifically of three. First, earlier this month we created an opportunity for fans of the Hawkeyes when Kirk elected to take one of his team's spring practice sessions to West Des Moines. It was a good day for all in spite of — surprise, surprise — some dicey weather. Second, fans of the Iowa football team had another chance to check out the Hawkeyes April 27 at Kinnick Stadium. That day was a good day, particularly for the 250 youngsters who participated in the first-ever "Kamp Kinnick," an event that is supported by members of the Iowa Football Club who have agreed to share their expertise with the youngsters as the on-field camp instructors. Lastly, spring in Iowa is traditionally the time of year where we use the series of banquets that are staged by the National I-Club and its local chapters to say "Thank you" to our many friends and fans. It's a time of the year that I always look forward to because it's an opportunity to show our appreciation for the support we receive year in and year out. The full schedule of banquets is available HERE. I invite you and your friends to join us.
