Teaming Up
Team-Based Learning Raises the Bar
for Students and Faculty
The scene is like a quiz show. A roomful
of first-year medical students, in teams of
five or six, is coming to consensus about
the answers to a set of clinically-oriented
questions. They are debating motor
neurons and demyelization, the value of
genetic testing versus muscle biopsy, and
histological interpretation of muscle tissue
slides. Once the teams work out their
answers, the fun begins.

Seeking a Cell's Source
Finding the Method that Will Find It
Scientists in Gary Owens' lab had a
problem. They'd been working on a
process for identifying modifications in
smooth muscle cell phenotype, a process
that has significant implications for clinical
diagnosis and treatment in atherosclerotic
heart disease. When they came to the
point where they needed to validate
their results, there was no testing method
available that could be applied in human
tissue.
