Freshman Duo Has Bright Future By Jimmy Novak U pon joining the University of Iowa women's golf team, Amy Ihm and Briana Midkiff have wasted little time making an impact. The freshman duo has a bright future and is part of the reason the women's golf program is headed in the right direction under second-year head coach Megan Menzel. "Being able to contribute to the team as a freshman is an outstanding feeling," Ihm said. "Our team is competitive and I give them credit for pushing me in practice, which then carries over onto the course. Being a freshman, I know I have a long way to go, but overall it's great to be in the lineup and performing." Midkiff has played in every tournament this season, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future as both her and Ihm will be competing for the Hawkeyes over spring break. Midkiff is coming off her lowest 54hole total at the Mountain View Collegiate, where she posted a 229 (+13). Menzel knows how important both freshmen are to the future of this program and has nothing but great things to say about the two newcomers. Midkiff 's success can be directly related to her teammates' work ethic and leadership. "Seeing the dedication and hard work my team is putting forth pushes me to work even harder," Midkiff said. "Our seniors, Kristi Cardwell and Gigi DiGrazia, have also set good examples for all of us to follow." Ihm has competed in the last four tournaments and has steadily improved. She set career lows for 18 and 54-hole scores, shooting a 75 (+3) and a 228 (+12) at the Westbrook Invitational.  Ihm is enjoying her time out on the course, but knows she is a long way from where she wants to be. "Midkiff has been a solid addition to our lineup this year," Menzel said. "She is a grinder and has come through many times for us this year. Midkiff has a great work ethic and is a leader for our team both on the course and in the classroom. "Ihm brings great energy to our roster," Menzel said.  "She has an outstanding work ethic and is an allaround great athlete. Her love for Iowa is infectious to our whole team and she is a pleasure to have on the roster." Midkiff, Ihm and the rest of the Hawkeye women's golf team returns to action April 1 at the Challenge at Onion Creek in Austin, Texas.  Fans can follow live scoring at www.golfstat.com. 59
